Additional Information:

If you have never played in a League event before, or are new to D&D 3.5, this game is a great way to learn the basics of combat. The story line and potential for Role-Playing make it great for experienced players as well. Bring your existing teams or a new one. The GM will be available for a half an hour before the game start to answer questions regarding the League, RPGA, D&D in general, and the new WotC Store games coming to the area.

Please Note: This game was originally scheduled for Saturday, December 13, 2003 at the SWA Game-A-Thon. Due to a death in the family, the GM has had to reschedule this game to the current date listed. If you attended the Game-A-Thon with the intention of participating in this event, please let the GM know. The RPGA game also scheduled for that day has been rescheduled for the February 2004 Game-A-Thon. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

The Situation

Dragons Den was founded to replace the center for commerce that perished when the Lich Nate took over Pinnacle's Spire. Several weeks ago, reports started coming in that the 400 square miles under his control have vanished leaving behind a barren patch of land. Now freedom fighters and champions are joining the neighboring states in a cleanup operation to remove the remnants of the evil regime. The mayor has been trying to get a meeting for days now with Kevin Milbane to determine if the Merchants Guild will remain in Dragons Den. Will they try to rebuild Pinnacle's Spire as their main center of commerce? Or will they honor the spirit in which Dragons Den was designed. After all, most of the resources in Dragons Den need to be imported. The richer resources of Terra 17 may prove too much of a lure for the guilds thus leaving Dragons Den to wither and die.

The mayor has received a report of a mine about 50 miles from Dragons Den. There seem to be some issues with the local inhabitants. But if he can negotiate a trade agreement with them, then he might be able to ensure the future of his city. He has asked the Guild of Champions to provide him with an advance team that can travel to the village near Dragons Perch and begin the negotiations.

Could failure mean the end of Dragons Den? What are the issues with the villagers? Why is the mayor only now hearing of this mine? And why does he think champions are required for the advance team? Answer the challenge and find out!

Registered Teams & Their Fates

Six champions (5 teams) answered the call from Mayor Racuu Binavm. After a short briefing, the teams were tasked with a advance mission to open up negotiations with the village that guards the entrance to the mine shaft. The champions wisely took an hour to pick some additional supplies and to pick up some mounts.

The Western Passage proved it's normal difficult self, but provided no special delays for our champions. Upon their arrival at the village, the heroes made quite an impression. They requested an audience with the Chief Elder and were directed to the center of the village. The Chief Elder and the Seer informed the champions that, as the "Strangers of Legend", they had been expected. Our heroes were offered a feast for dinner and lodging for the night. In the morning, they would be shown to the tunnel and placed to a task to prove themselves. Things went peacfully, but Lia did raise more than one eyebrow with her insistence on magically sweeping the homes of their benefactors.

In the morning, the champions were shown to the cave entrance and introduced to Charlin, their guide. He led them down into the cave and to a chamber to meet again with the Elder and the Seer. Along the way, he paused to show them a vein of the ore they sought. Up until now, even the villagers themselves had been forbidden to enter the caves. Only the Chief Elder and Seer had permission to do so. For this reason, the identity of the exact ore was unknown. It was now discovered to be a deposit of Caladrite. A very sought after resource and very valuable for construction and the other minerals usually found nearby. A brief stop farther along the tunnel revealed small holes in the wall that gave an indication of a reptilian civilization somewhere in the cave system.

The champions arrived at the chamber and assisted their guide in lighting the torches for the room. The walls were covered with a mural depicting the life cycle of a group of dragons. The mural appeared to move. Shortly after, the group was joined by the Chief Elder and the Seer. With them came the Chief Elder of the Lizardmen, Shatiz. Slightly surprised by this, many of the champions were suspicious. The only real encounter with lizardmen in recent years was the minions of the Demon King on Terra 4. Their suspicions were unnecessary though and the three hosts relayed the history and mission before the champions.

A great demon lay somewhere in the caves. The villages were tasked with keeping it trapped. Recently it had laid a clutch of eggs. Those eggs must be destroyed. If the characters could do this, they would prove themselves. The villages would be most willing to open trade negotiations with such people. The villages would be able to use the extra resourcees to continue their missions and keep the creature trapped in the caves and docile.

The champions were given a map to the egg chamber and shown through a secret door in the Western wall of the chamber. After some difficult travel, they finally came upon the egg chamber and their first enemy. A megaraptor jumped in front of the party, and in a flury of comic misses, attempted to rip Lia limb from limb. The creature found the champions too much of a match. Despite shells almost impossible to crack and creatures faster than your average lizard, the champion overcame the mini dinosaurs with a combinations of magic and brute force. As proof of their success, the champions took a limb from each creature for the Elders.

The champions returned and made their report to the village. They negotiated a fair trade for the egg shells at 200gp each and easily made it up with the jewelers in Dragons Den at more than 700gp per shell. Their success opened the way for trade negotiations. For this, the mayor paid a fee of 270gp per champion.

  1. Philosopher Kings (Novice)
    Player: Jeremy Tarr

Glaucon (Human Male Fighter 15) appeared on the scene for the first time and proved himself quite a champion. His strength in the mission proved invaluable as did his martial skills.

Philosopher Kings survives to adventure again.

  2. Night's Wind (Novice)
    Player: Chris Kilmade

Lia Nailo (Elf Female Rogue 5 / Assassin 5 / Occult Slayer 5) showed an immense amount of curiosity in her first mission for the Guild. While she almost caused the champions to be evicted from the village with her invetsigation of the village homes, her search skills were put to good use in th caves. Her stealthy attacks held their weight during combat as well.

Night's Wind survives to adventure again.

  3. Cheerful (Master)
    Player: Jennifer Sternfeld

Cedrik (Human Male Psion Nomad 15) knows how to take the fun out of an enemy. All the attacks and dexterity in the world do you no good suspended in mid air and unable to move. He turned multiple enemy into piniatas for the group to wack at their leisure. Calladra (Human Female Psion Savant 4 / Pyro 1) proved very useful for lighting the torches and cooking dinosaur flesh.

    Cheerful survives to adventure again.

  4. Spirit Wolf (Novice)
    Player: Richard Dalpe

Aron Silverwind (Elf Male Wizard 15) made his first appearance with mixed results. While doing a good amount of damage fireball, much of that was to his fellow champions. The eggs themselves proved immune to much of his ability. Their was also some tension, for reasons still unclear, between himself and Shatiz. Something about the old origin myths of their peoples. His knowledge and magics came in very handy while investigating the caves.

Spirit Wolf survives to adventure again.

  5. Raging Bull (Master)
    Player: Jonathan Sternfeld

Grynak Beleroth (Minotaur Male Barbarian 9 ECL 17) arrived at the village in Cliff Wall Valley to the scream of a young child. But when you are a large creature perched on a gargantuan mount, what do you expect from simple folk. Grynak's strength and power proved useful in more than one instance.

Raging Bull survives to adventure again.
