The Situation

The champions are called to deal with people who refuse to pay their taxes and have erected a makeshift wall aound their village. Troops have been sent, but met with resistance and were unable to arrest the villagers (at least not without harming them). If Lord Granor cannot collect the taxes, King Jhasegh will take back the lands and impose an even higher tax to pay for the effort.

Lord Granor has directed the champions to collect the owed taxes and arrest the village elders. Other villages, fearing higher taxes, are supporting Lord Granor in this matter.

Registered Teams & Their Fates

The champions answered the summons of Lord Granor. They arrived at his estate to ferret out more details regarding the problems that would cause a small village to raise such a fuss. Lord Granor assured the champions that he did not wish harm on the villagers, but that were legally responsible for their fair share of the taxes for his valley.

The champions proceeded to Forest Edge. On sight of their arrival, the villagers immediately began to fire upon them and curse their existence. The villagers labelled them demons and thieves, and they hadn't even said hello yet. The villagers were obviously an inferior fighting force and their many attempts to cut down the teams were laughably dismissed.

A swarm if insects soon sent the villagers running for their buildings. A foray into the village by Isolnamit showed the rest of the village hiding in the stables/workshop. The teams followed this up with an assault on the cabin holding Boman, the village elder. Tharivol's arrows cut down several of the men in the building, much to his own dismay. Boman was quickly captured as Tharivol and Isolnamit slammed him through the window to the ground outside. Ruin was able to help some of the injured.

After removing Boman from the village and dismissing the spells binding him, the team began thei questionning. The village actually believed itself to be under siege by goblin raiders. Because the villagers spend all of their money on the weapons, they have nothing left for taxes. They feel that if Lord Granor won't defend them, why should they pay the 7,000gp owed in taxes.

As it turns out, the villagers were the only people to see the goblins. The very men that had been delivering the weapons for them to buy every few days, had glamered the area so that all other approaching people looked like goblins and orcs.

The teams set a trap for the con men and easily captured them (ok, several died). The teams searched the thieves and found a map to their hidden treasure. They succeeded in finding the loot: 35,000gp, 27,215sp, 300 gems at 50gp each, and 71 pieces of jewelry worth 100gp each. The teams were generous this day and provided the village with enough gold and supplies to get them through the next growing season and to pay their taxes to Lord Granor.

The surviving bandits will have time to reflect on their deeds. Shortly after the champions departed, they were assigned to 7 years prison and working in the fields. And the Granor Valley is known for its very long growing seasons.

  1. Lawn
    Player: Jennifer Sternfeld

Roywyn's (Ruin) (Gnome Wizard 10 / Druid 9) efforts to help the injured after the assault on the village were noteworthy, but alas could only help a few. Her inquisition of the grass was helpful in solving the mystery at Forest Edge. While she did search the bandits for treasure, it was only by prompting and luck that she discovered the secrets of the scrolls she found. Was it intentional? Or did she wish she had acquired them with additional stealth? No one may ever know....

    Lawn survives to adventure again.

  2. Thunder
    Player: Julia McGinnis

Whisper (Human Female Ranger 16) approached the village mostly unscathed. Her tracking abilities came in handy as the investigation progressed. But it was her arrows that kicked butt, or rather pinned them to the ground. Ouch!

    Thunder survives to adventure again.

  3. Twig
    Player: Vanessa Wilcox-Swarez

Lisonamit (Wood Elf Druid 21) used his shape shifting abilities to recon the village and assist with the investigation. While he arrived late, his stone wall flying companion, the bear, provided a strong tool in overcoming the enemy.

    Twig survives to adventure again.

  4. Death from Afar
    Player: Jonathan Sternfeld

Tharivol Liaden's (Elf Fighter 6 / Wizard 2 / Arcane Archer 11 / Deepwoods Sniper 2) arrows are deadly for sure. Even when he wishes otherwise. Using his ghoul touch arrows in an attempt to subdue several of the villagers, he instead ended up killing 4 out of 5 of the village elders. As pennance, he has dedicated himself to the defense of the village until it gets back on its feet. He has also made a rather substantial donation to the village and will seek guidance from the temples on his return to Dragons Den. Unfortunately, war is messy even under the best of intentions. Sargen of Hornwood (Human Rogue 9) and Andrinor Agriaba (Human Male Cleric 7) assisted the day providing their skills. Their detection of the magic and "offness" in the area heped a great deal.

Death from Afar survives to adventure again.
