The Situation

The destruction of the Del Bourne Valley has been reversed and life is beginning to return. But buried beneath the Valley is a secret the gods themselves would rather not be told. Never the less, the Valley is a topic of interest. And as such the bards have begun singing the old ballads and telling the old tales.

Deep within the mysteries of Del Bourne, an ancient power has taken notice. Working once again to bring destruction to the Valley, and thus silence to its secrets, the evil of the undead have been summoned. A thousand thousand warriors from the greatest of battle are starting to rise as a plague across the land.

The new residents of Del Bourne have asked for champions to route out the evil and stop its plans. The seers and scribes have discovered that something called the Fires of Purification were once thought to be located beneath the Valley and that whatever summoned the evil army is working to hide it.

Can you wade through the undead, stop the evil, and discover the secret of the Fires of Purification? And wasn't the original destruction of the valley the fault of mortal greed and magic? Or have greater forces been at work all along?

A challenge awaits those who answer the call!

GM Note: Paper and pencil will help on this one. You're going into unmapped areas and finding your way out again may be difficult.

Registered Teams & Their Fates

The journey from the mysts to the valley took 5 days. The champions wisely secured mounts for those without them and laid in extra provisions. Upon arriving at the Valley, they were met by a military unit. The sergeant explained that, for the most part, he and his men could take care of the undead. They were not that quick and losses seemed to be low. What he couldn't understand was why they were defending a well in the middle of the valley. The sergeant agreed to lead the teams to the well.

On their way to the well the party was ambushed by what appeared to be an unusually strong set of skeletons. It took a while, but with time the champions succeeded in defeating the enemy. They proceeded to the well where the mystery truly began.

An investigation showed that the well was functional and very deep. The teams stowed their gear and took flight by several means. They descended the well for 500' before reaching the water's surface. 10' below the surface, they found an entrance that led them to an underground passage.

The passage was part of a trap designed by the great Ayis, Trap Maker to the Gods. The champions made their way through a locked door, past crushing pillars, through magical attacks that threatened their lives and gear, and eventually made it to the central chamber. Here they found a puzzle.

A ramp led down to the center of the main chamber where a pillar stood. Atop the pillar were 3 diamonds of considerable size. 4 wash basins adorned the compass points of the pillar and provided water that seemed to clean our explorers right down to the soul. 3 fires burned in outcoves along the walls. By using the diamonds as keys, the champions tried their hands at experiencing the fires first hand. The results were exhilarating as energy returned to them and they felt true to a new direction in life.

The champions left the chamber and exited the underground passage. They stopped only long enough to retrieve 2 of the large gems that laid in the second trap room (leaving behind 2 gems and 4 immovable rods). The experience left the champions with an appreciation of their luck and a fear of what could have happened had it been absent.

  1. Death from Afar
    Player: Jonathan Sternfeld

Tharivol Liaden (Elf Fighter 6 / Wizard 2 / Arcane Archer 10 / Deepwoods Sniper 2) and Andrinor Agriaba (Human Male Cleric 6) lived up to their reputations. In the first attack, Andrinor turned the foul creatures with the power of his faith. His religious knowledge proved useful as the teams made their way down the Graz'zt well. Normally depending on his bow, Tharivol's prowess with a sword should never be doubted. But it was Sargen of Hornwood (Human Rogue 8) that got the teams through the initial traps set by Ayis. Successfully disabling most of the traps and detecting many of the dangers, he led the team down the passageway and to their destination. The champions will never know what could have happened if he hadn't detected those pillar traps or ignored the gems that triggered the disjunction and pain traps. Though one of the team's mounts was downed, Andrinor quickly remedied the situation.

Death from Afar survives to adventure again.

  2. Elemental Fist
    Player: Mark Jerard

The transforming Slate Grithen (Human Cleric 5 / Sorcerer 5 / Geomancer 7) came in handy with his interpretation of a barracuda. Swimming below the water's surface, he scouted out the side tunnel that led to the underground passage with an oil hazard in the way. First to brave the fires, his courage showed the others the secrets held by the ancient chamber.

Elemental Fist survives to adventure again. His horse is a different matter. How much was that deposit anyway?!

  3. Lawn
    Player: Jennifer Sternfeld

Roywyn's (Ruin) (Gnome Wizard 9 / Druid 9) amphibious tag-a-longs showed their usefulness again with underwater investigation and above ground force (skeletons, yummy). Giving the boys a show with her oiled up presence, her advice won the teams more benefit than they would believe. The power of nature exists even under the earth.

    Lawn survives to adventure again.
