The Situation

The fourth and final chapter of the Orb series. The secrets of the Orbs are finally revealed: The Blue Orb (now in Michael's hands) protects a high wizard during a special ritual to trap a demon abomination, the Yellow Orb places the demon's soul into the trap, the Green Orb creates the trap, and the Red Orb binds all the forces together to disallow the DC 5 save.

Only three problems: The Red Orb is on one of the more... unpleasant layers of the Abyss in the hands of the demon in question, the only high wizard who can do this is just now recovering from a Feeblemind spell, multiple forms of insanity, and mental anguish caused by rapid plane shifting [rumor has it that he angered a certain lich over a failed job and was bounced on his head throughout the planes], and the Orbs currently are not in close proximity to each other in the high wizard's possession (though that one can be remedied easily... right?).

Your mission: Travel to the Abyss with High Wizard Incar Cuzh and keep him alive on the way to the demon's lair at the center of a city filled with demons and devils at war. Trap the Balor/Pit Fiend/Marilith cross in its own inner lair, trap its soul in a black diamond, then disintegrate the diamond and disintegrate its dust; the High Wizard carries a scroll with three Disintegrate spells. Without all the Orbs at hand, it will be very very difficult to trap the soul. Not impossible, but don't hold your breath. If trapping doesn't work, kill it by any means you can.

Success and any item a hero desires [Up to 60,000 GP value, or two at maximum 25,000 gold apiece] will go to members of High Wizard Incar Cuzh's honor guard that he thinks serve him most faithfully and in the most efficient manner possible. Any treasure brought back from the Abyss though, might be destroyed by royal decree so that the original owners don't come looking for it...

Politics among the nobles of the realms are causing them to be overly paranoid of everyone around them since Nate's ascension to the throne, even heroes. Thus, no spells of raising can be accessed unless ample proof is presented to the nobles that A) said heroes will not be a threat to said nobles, and B) they have something useful to offer to the nobles' lands or nobles themselves. [Bribes, anyone?]

Oh, one last thing. While you're down there on vacation, do watch out for the Formian-Slaadi war...

Registered Teams & Their Fates

The goal was to bring the gems and the wizard to the demon. After Kij charmed the wizard, the teams portaled to the abyss and received a warm welcome from the Slaad and the Formains. The teams flew over the fortress walls bypassing the gate guards, and blasted a hole into the side of the tower. Ascending to the top, they encountered a door made of pure flame. The teams tried water, holy water, and disintegrate to get rid of the door. Finally, it was Twig's Greater Dispelling that removed the door as an obstacle. Inside, the Demon was in a protective circle, with an elven wizardess and four black crystals on one side, four demons on the other side, and Hezrou demons in the back. After dealing with the rest of the minor demons, Kij pulled his controlling the air trick. The wind slammed the demon back against the wall and held him there while the wizard attempted to activate the trap. After four or five rounds of being forced to do nothing but stand there and concentrate on the wind while the wizard couldn't get the demon into the trap with the single gem he had, Twig handed him the gem he had and the trap was successful. Then the teams portaled back out.

Details on the activities of all the champions are slim on this one, but reports indicate that everyone survived.

  1. D’Varien Lin’Toth (Novice Level Team)
    Player: Alain Ackerman
D’Varien Lin’Toth (Wood Elf Fighter 5 / Order of the Bow Initiate 10) marked this challenge with skill and prowess.

D’Varien Lin’Toth survives to adventure again.

  2. Rig (Novice Level Team)
    Player: Wayne Edie
At the very beginning of the game Kij (Male Human Psion 15) charmed the wizard. He dominated the Slaad and convinced them to deal with the Formians so the teams could continue. He also collected the door knob from the door of flame. Dominating the group of four demons on his first shot, he caused their controlling crystals to explode knocking out the Wizardess. He attempted the same with the two more, but only succeeded at one of them, and was forced to place an Ectoplasmic Wall around the second. The second then Gated in another like him, as demons tend to do. He had the demons under his control attack the main demon, and while they obviously didn't stand a chance, they made good distractions and flankers. He then walked up just outside of the containment circle, and dropped his Instant Fortress on the main demon. After the main demon was defeated, Kij used his "friendship" with the wizard to get successes for a few of the other people there and put them in his debt. He also brought the elf wizardess back with him, healed her, and dominated her the moment she regained consciousness.

    Rig survives to adventure again.

  3. Twig
    Player: Vanessa Wilcox-Swarez
Lisonamit (Wood Elf Druid 17) marked this challenge with skill and prowess. Delivering a second crystal to the wizard when needed, he saw to the downfall of the demon.

    Twig survives to adventure again.

  4. Elemental Fist
    Player: Mark Jerard
Slate Grithen (Human Male Cleric 5 / Sorcerer 5 / Geomancer 7) marked this challenge with skill and prowess.

Elemental Fist survives to adventure again.
