The Situation

The recently rethroned King Michael was not having a good time of it. His castle smelled of ale and had all these odd stains, and as if that wasn't enough, there was an odd green "waterfall" in his throne room. The green stuff had already sent his castle wizard screaming, and set the local witch to muttering about things unnatural and unseen. Queen Esmerelda wanted to get the room decorated before the honored guests started arriving for Princess Emily's christening, which was the following day at noon. Between all the details of a large royal bash, and this new little problem, the king was beginning to think being a captive of Vordan was more fun.

In the end, the champions set his castle to rights before his daughter's christening. Two ring keys were awarded to the clean up crew from King Valor. An invite to the party was also issued by King Michael.

Registered Teams & Their Fates

  1. Death from Afar
    Player: Jonathan Sternfeld
Sargen of Hornwood (Human Rogue 7) was the first of the team members to take interest in the mirror in the throne room. His interest did earn him a mild rebuke from the watching Leitan, but no lasting harm (fortunate for him, she was in a good mood). The intrepid archer Tharivol Liadon (Elf Fighter 6 / Wizard 1 / Arcane Archer 10 / Deepwoods Sniper 2) did manage to kill a phase spider.

Death from Afar survives to adventure again.

  2. Ghost Wind
    Player: Christopher J. Ford
Illiri (Human Sorcerer 16), Ja'Nek (Human Cleric 3 / Psion 1), Melee (Dwarf Fighter 4), Thomas (Human Ranger 4), Elizabeth (Human Sorcerer 4), and Lyrin (Human Bard 12) showed up for the assignment. Team Ghost Wind did little initial damage to the Flux Mosses before the first call to retreat. Later they did kill a phase spider. The team also had the honor of eradicating the receiving room Flux Moss, which burst and turned young Liz into a copy of itself. Leitan’s spider familiar Terrence later polymorphed her back to her rightful form while Illiri looked on. Liz was awarded a ring key for this somewhat traumatic experience. We are not sure if she considers this adequate compensation.

Ghost Wind survives to adventure again.

  3. Elemental Fist
    Player: Mark Jerard
Slate Grithen (Human Cleric 5 / Sorcerer 5 / Geomancer 5) [LEVELS NEEDED FOR THIS TEAM!!!] was the first to be phase nibbled after the throne room Flux Moss was eradicated. In the end he did manage to raise one of the slain spiders as a zombie, hopefully he finds this proper compensation for being snacked on by its brethren. He was also part of the post melee fracas, no word on his condition.

Elemental Fist revives to adventure again?

  4. Grywlthznchplk
    Player: Jason Isolda
Nate (Human Lich Conjurer 5 / Alienist 9 / Lore Master 3) fell on his feet a total of four different times, due to the strange antimagic effects of the Flux Moss, (much to his chagrin). His minions did manage to eradicate a Flux Moss, and he was awarded a ring key, along with a somewhat reluctant invite to the christening of Princess Emily. He also participated in the post melee fracas, to an uncertain end result.

    Grywlthznchplk survives to adventure again.

  5. Basalt
    Player: Andrew R. Proto
Sivol Unil (Human Earth Elemental Wizard 5 / Elemental Savant 10) was the first and only one to touch a Flux Moss, showing that a hard head isn’t always a good thing. His pain and suffering was a warning to the other teams. He spent the middle of the adventure walking into (instead of his normal walking through) a few walls, much to his dismay. His later death could perhaps be attributed to this unfortunate encounter. He was later resurrected by Nate.

    Basalt revives to adventure again.

  6. Visiting Team 1 from NYC
    Player: Alex Fung
Ma Gwai's (Half-Elf Monk 5 / Drunken Master 9) drunken staggering and unorthodox fighting style served to help him kill two phase spiders, and seriously harm the receiving room Flux Moss while fencing with a torch stand. His sloppy form also caused the king’s staff witch Leitan to make several comments on his charisma that were less than charitable. He was later killed by Nate.

Visiting Team 1 is remembered in memoriam.

  7. Visiting Team 2 from NYC
    Player: Brian McCarmick
FitzRoy (Human Fighter 5 / Lasher 10) got phase nibbled with little lasting effect. He otherwise participated little in the actual adventure. He was later killed by Nate.

Visiting Team 2 is remembered in memoriam.

  8. Hammer of Moradin
    Player: Tom Leonard

Griff (Dwarf ?) lobbed some alchemist fire on the receiving room Flux Moss and watched it burn. He also tested it with acid (to no affect). He then heard the call to leave the room. He later entered the throne room after hearing Slate scream. He realized there was a phase spider in the team’s midst. He managed one hit to it before being in the way of a rather nasty lightning bolt from Team Grywlthznchplk who was of course aiming for another spider across the room.
    Personal Log:
Upon hearing of the King's new problem, Griff grabbed his swords, his beer, and some healing potions from his stock. He entered the troubled area only to find two "waterfalls" rather than the one he was expecting, and began his investigation. Thinking it was green slime, he lobbed some alchemist fire on it to burn it, but after a few moments was told it was not green slime, but something much much worse.

Testing it some more by dropping an acid flask on it (and watching it do nothing), he knew he was in for a tougher time than expected. Realizing there was too little time before the christening to apply dwarven engineering to the problem and turn the whole thing into a decoration (with the lethal part of it well away from people), he stopped to think. That's when he saw people leave and heard the lich say he was going to blow stuff up. He knew he'd have to leave as well to avoid the damage.

Hey, when a lich tells you what to do, you listen. Whether you like it or not doesn't matter.

As he left to join the other teams outside, he knew he would have to destroy the unnatural abomination someday. "I HATE magic... just you wait, unliving one. You'll get what's coming to you." he muttered to himself.

A few minutes later, after another team entered to look around, he heard a scream from inside. Rushing inside he cursed under his breath. A Phase Spider, which was something his Defensive Stance would be totally ineffective against. Snarling his rage, he charged up to attack. Smacking it once and wounding it, he had only a split second to react as the lich launched a Lightning Bolt at it... and through him to hit a second spider several feet away. Taking the damage like a man and seeing the spider in front of him down, he turned around to attack the other only to see a third spider get smacked with missiles from behind the throne.

He turned again, ready to strike, but before he could do anything, others reacted and both spiders were killed. He'd at least helped in the fight, so he was not upset that everyone took what he considered his glory. As he was reflecting on the battle, he heard a cry from behind him as the lich flew overhead. "Everyone out! I'll deal with the other waterfall in the next room as well."

He exited the area to join the other teams again, shaking his head and wondering, "Why would a lich help living people, especially good living people?"

As he watched the lich fly in, he saw Liz of Team Ghost Wind get turned into more of the gooey stuff that was causing such a problem. He was irritated that he couldn't kill it because it was someone he'd seen help out the other people around him on previous missions (and thus treated her as a friend), but seeing the lich's Fly spell get neutralized when it came close to the goo gave him a good laugh. Watching the lich fall and grumble about how walking was for wimps also made him laugh. All under his breath, of course. He was not ready yet to take on "Ol' Lichy", especially by himself.

The threat soon dealt with, he prepared to leave and return to town for a beer, but not before seeing another sorcerer with a cat's tail (and other additions) raise one of the slain spiders as a zombie. "So many people out for themselves," he mused. "They can't protect themselves decently enough so they create unlife to do the job for them. I'll have to kill it later."

Upon reaching town, he immediately went to his hidden cache of goods and put away his potions. Picking up a mace etched with holy dwarven runes, he snapped his finger and watched it shrink in his hand and into the leather glove he wore, just in case it was needed sooner than he expected. Smirking, he knew that before long, he'd show that lich who was boss (at least until he could find the lich's phylactery and dump it in a vat of holy water).

He just needed to get allies and enough time to "charge" [get enough game successes] his other goodies first...
