The Situation

This was a 6, or was it 7, hour module. Admission was a Ring Key of the Spire earned in one of the previous 10 sessions or a "win" from session 11. Prizes were given out.

Special Rules: Championship
  • Teams had a 1 hour "preparation" phase while the portal warmed up. (Normally the adventure begins upon the arrival of the teams.)
  • Ring keys were surrendered at the tournament as they were needed to activate the portal.
  • Prizes:
First Place (1): Epic Level Adventures - This new source book contains the information needed for gaming with characters above level 20. If it is not out by the time the championship takes place, you will receive a copy upon its release.
Second Place (1): Set of 3 Miniatures + $10.00 gift certificate.
Third Place (2): Set of 3 Miniatures + $5.00 gift certificate.
Consolation Prizes: $5.00 Gift Certificate for Flights
  • The championship was structured in such a way as to make the first place winner unambiguous. (Normally, it is possible to have multiple teams with equal claim to the prize.) A score was assigned to each encounter by CR and EL. These were added at the end to determine the winner. There was a tie for third place.

The Story:
Up to this point the King had only made general requests of our heroes. But desperate times called for desperate measures. Our heroes found out exactly what cost was associated with the Signet Ring Keys of the Spire.

Buried deep in the caves at Del Bourne was an item of immense evil power that Erythnul wanted. To distract the King and his forces, a massive assault was launched against the Spire.

After just cleaning up some trouble in their own areas that sprang up for no reason, the adventurers were greeted by a mysterious transparent messenger that seemed to project from their rings. The messenger delivered a missive of summons from the King. Traveling to the Spire by the portals provided, the teams soon found the entire area a battlefield. After finally making it to the King, they were informed of Erythnul's plan and asked to thwart it by stopping his agent before he could return and destroy Valor's rule. The task was accepted and preparations begun.

The teams found the caves at Del Bourne a near death trap and the evil cleric Tebor to be a foe fleet of foot. The teams managed to survive near drowning, slamming pillars, poison gas, and deadly cave-ins. It wasn't until they got back to the Spire though, that they were able to stop Tebor mere feet from the King himself. A close call by any accounting.

Valor has reported that the talisman that Tebor retrieved has been destroyed.

The Result

  1. Ghost Wind
    Player: Christopher J. Ford
Illiri (Human Sorcerer 16) appeared on the seen to pay her respects to King Valor and to assist in the portal activation. While the other teams searched Del Bourne, she stayed behind and aided the clerics seeing to the king. Note: Ghost Wind participated solely for story line purposes and gains no player team benefits for this adventure. . Ghost Wind survives to adventure again.

  2. Steel Order
    Player: Wayne Edie
Gdarin (Human Paladin 18) and Deloth (Human Fighter 1 / Cleric 7) presented themselves with usual flair and prowess. Helping to defend the wall while others prepared to leave, the giant construct attacking the front wall felt his blade. In the maze at Del Bourne, the team showed cunning and fortitude as they plunged through the gas traps, answered the challenge of a cryptic knight, and found the vault room. Steel Order survives to adventure again.

  3. Code Red
    Player: Alain D. Ackerman
Louen (Human Monk 5) and Darren (Human Fighter x / Master Swordsman 15 - x) found themselves in an obstacle course from hell. Slamming pillars and a loss of gravity will provide hours of stories for grandchildren in the future. Code Red survives to adventure again.

  4. Death From Afar
    Player: Jon Sternfeld
Tharivol Liadon (Elf Fighter 6 / Wizard 1 / Arcane Archer 10 / Deep Woods Sniper 1) and Sargen of Hornwood (Human Rogue 5) entered the maze at Del Bourne ready for the chase. An invisible figure caught Tharivol's attention as it tried to move past them on the first level. But for chance itself, Tebor would have met his end right at that moment. Indeed, the wound he received from Tharivol would later contribute to his death. Death From Afar survives to adventure again.

  5. Thunder
    Player: Julia McGinnis
Whisper (Human Ranger 13) and Delde (Half-orc Sorcerer 8) struck off on their own after a while. A tactic that placed them in the forefront of the action. Among the first to exit the maze, they had to deal with wizards and trolls. Their tactic also placed them in position to return to the SPire and be there to protect the king when Tebor arrived. For their tactics and skill, Thunder was awarded a Ring Key of the Realm and charged with the future protection of the King and his law. Thunder survives to adventure again.

  6. Twig
    Player: Vanessa Wilcox-Swarez
Lisonamit (Wood Elf Druid 17) showed why you don't mess with a druid. Even gargantuan constructs find it difficult to continue existence while being rended apart by a super sized bear. Showing additional fortitude in the gas traps at Del Bourne, Twig once again proved an asset as friend and ally. Twig survives to adventure again.

  7. Grywlthznchplk
    Player: Jason Isolda
Nate (Human Lich Conjurer 5 / Alienist 9 / Lore Master 2) appeared on the scene to the surprise of all as a Lich. This evil creature was apparently still bound by the magic of the rings, but was sent to the prison cell as all evil beings were. Too bad the cell door had long since been blown off its hinges. Nate convinced the guards to let him near the King for orders and participated as an ally; even helping to defend the King's life in the end. Many came away harboring questions and concerns about their former comrade in life. If they only knew how close they were to the truth.... Grywlthznchplk survives to adventure again.
