The Situation

After a century of preparation, the time has come to destroy an old enemy. A powerful demon once nearly destroyed the kingdom before being trapped inside a gemstone. The gem was then locked inside an old fortress and guardians were put in place. Now the wizards are ready to destroy the gem and the demon inside. You must retrieve the gem intact and return it to the wizards. Be warned - the demon itself may be sealed away, but the fortress is not a friendly place.

One more thing. Hidden inside the fortress are a pair of plate gauntlets. These are required to safely move the gem. Do not attempt to touch it without them.

  4. Nature's Vengeance
    Player: Tom Leonard
Nature's Vengeance (Arwenna Silvermoon: Elf Rogue 8 / Autumn Dreamstalker: Elf Wizard 8 / Light-Beyond-Darkness Elf Cleric 8) entered more slowly this time, making sure they were not surprised by any surprises on the way to get the gauntlets.

After a Locate Object spell cast by Autumn failed, she sent out Dancing Lights so that anything hidden would attack the lights instead of them. Exploring one room and finding bodies, they saw Tharivol's human friend Sargen running down the corridor, wounded. Light-Beyond-Darkness dropped a spell in favor of a Cure Moderate Wounds on Sargen. This had Autumn fuming, but Arwenna calmed her, saying "He works with Elves instead of against them. He's a friend." That cooled Autumn's jets for the time being.

Seeing the other teams beginning to make progress, Autumn let off a Haste spell, but the armored breastplate she was wearing interfered with the spell, causing it to fail. First rule of Wizards: NEVER WEAR ARMOR!! After that they explored a couple of other rooms, triggering a couple of curses that dampened their skills, and having the cleric call on a Celestial Lion to attack a weird construct designed to defend an otherwise empty room.

Entering the main chamber, they discovered a bloodstone golem wearing one of the gauntlets. Instantly Autumn threw Magic Missiles at it, Light-Beyond-Darkness sent in the other Celestial Lion (which was quickly wiped out) and Arwenna tried to hide behind a pillar to sneak around and explore. When a Fireball didn't do anything to the golem, they decided it was time to withdraw and make sure it didn't hurt themselves or anyone else... so Autumn sealed off the area with a Wall of Ice. All the golem did was return to its original position and not pursue.

After another team smashed the wall down and entered to engage the golem, the team stood ready to aid when they were most needed. Autumn cast Invisibility and stood by waiting for her moment, Arwenna went off to find Tharivol and enlist his help, and Light-Beyond-Darkness decided enough was enough and cast Divine Power to gain strength before moving in. While the other teams attacked the golem after Team Ghost Wind's telekinetic sphere went into the room, Light strode in, confident that her god would protect her. She was sadly mistaken as the thing had reach and slew her with three mighty punches.

Meanwhile, Arwenna had found Tharivol and the other gauntlet. Not wanting to hurt himself trying to get it, he gladly let Arwenna take it as the fight raged on within the main chamber. Later rather than sooner, it was made known to the teams that the gem had been found, and at this, Arwenna got an idea. Could she, she thought, balance the gem on one gauntlet and bring it back to the wizard? She wasted no time running toward where the gem lay, but she was stopped by her sister, who put her under a spell of Invisibility.

Thus protected, Arwenna headed straight for where the gem was kept. Seeing its size and beauty, greed overcame her and she whipped out a tanglefoot bag (thus becoming visible) at the other person in the room without even taking the time to see who it was. It turned out to be one of the other teams' members, a human ranger with the favored enemy of elves. The tanglefoot bag slammed against the ranger but didn't slow the ranger down as she attempted to balance the stone. Unfortunately a curse earlier in the mission robbed her of her dexterity so all she could do was move the gem along the pedestal where it was kept.

That's when Arwenna noticed Melee the dwarf of Team Ghost Wind on the other side of the ranger.

                             Uh oh.

The ranger responded in kind after the dwarf gave the rogue a love tap with the business end of his weapon. The ranger did the rest.

Autumn, still under her Invisibility, ran for the altar to see how Arwenna was doing (hearing one's death throes tends to do that). Unfortunately, she ran right into Melee, who knew *something* was there and swung out of defense, smacking Autumn before she had a chance to back off. To make matters worse, Tharivol saw his friend Melee swinging at something, and thinking it was something dangerous, fired a few arrows. The last thing Autumn's eyes saw were the arrows headed straight for them.

Ironic that the elf who hated humans the most was slain by a fellow elf, no? Nature's Vengeance is remembered in memoriam.
