The Situation |

| The King ordered an attack on a well armed fortress buried deep within the hills of Caramane on Terra 15. The fortress was the reported den of a highway band that had recently escalated to murder and ransom. This behavior could not be brooked. Five hours after the attack began, new intelligence discredited the original reports. The fortress was a sting operation being run by the local sheriff. The rumors were mostly created to bolster the cover of the operatives involved. A local band bought the story too well. The murders were orchestrated in order to get the King's forces to take out the competition. The true killers were caught and confessed. But, by that time, the attack was underway and people in danger and dying. Word had to be delivered to the battlefield for all parties to cease hostilities. The mission was simple enough. Travel through the portal to Terra 15 and deliver the King's message. Oh yeah, one hitch. The true killers had friends who destroyed the local portal. The closest available portal was 10 miles away and located in a stronghold controlled by a banished and very angry Troll. The troll that the King had banished turned out to be the troll form of Erythnul. An evil god who ticked off one to many of his peers, Erythnul became trapped in the ancient stronghold by forces of which even the King was unaware. Answering the call and challenge of the King were four brave teams. Now you may ask: What was the biggest challenge facing these heroes of growing renown? Was it the multiple trolls that they were not warned about? No, not quite. Was it the virtual battlefield set up to distract them from their quest? Not exactly. Was it the God Erythnul that, despite all attempts, refused calls for personal combat? No. You see the insidious enemy that barred and perplexed these heroes the most was, of all things, the front door. Spelled to resist damage and spells, it proved to be a formidable obstacle. In the end, the mission was only a partial success. The counter-order was received, but not before the last charge had been called. [The magic bonus for success was allowed, but not the XP.] All the teams survived as units. Unfortunately, also to survive this day, and most likely return, was Erythnul.... | |
