The Situation

The King ordered an attack on a well armed fortress buried deep within the hills of Caramane on Terra 15. The fortress was the reported den of a highway band that had recently escalated to murder and ransom. This behavior could not be brooked. Five hours after the attack began, new intelligence discredited the original reports. The fortress was a sting operation being run by the local sheriff. The rumors were mostly created to bolster the cover of the operatives involved.

A local band bought the story too well. The murders were orchestrated in order to get the King's forces to take out the competition. The true killers were caught and confessed. But, by that time, the attack was underway and people in danger and dying. Word had to be delivered to the battlefield for all parties to cease hostilities.

The mission was simple enough. Travel through the portal to Terra 15 and deliver the King's message. Oh yeah, one hitch. The true killers had friends who destroyed the local portal. The closest available portal was 10 miles away and located in a stronghold controlled by a banished and very angry Troll.

The troll that the King had banished turned out to be the troll form of Erythnul. An evil god who ticked off one to many of his peers, Erythnul became trapped in the ancient stronghold by forces of which even the King was unaware.

Answering the call and challenge of the King were four brave teams. Now you may ask: What was the biggest challenge facing these heroes of growing renown? Was it the multiple trolls that they were not warned about? No, not quite. Was it the virtual battlefield set up to distract them from their quest? Not exactly. Was it the God Erythnul that, despite all attempts, refused calls for personal combat? No. You see the insidious enemy that barred and perplexed these heroes the most was, of all things, the front door. Spelled to resist damage and spells, it proved to be a formidable obstacle. In the end, the mission was only a partial success. The counter-order was received, but not before the last charge had been called. [The magic bonus for success was allowed, but not the XP.]

All the teams survived as units. Unfortunately, also to survive this day, and most likely return, was Erythnul....

The Result

  1. Team Nature
    Player: Tom Leonard
Debuting for this adventure, Team Nature showed the value of diverse skills and the bravery of those tied to the forces of life and magic. Sadly, it also faced the greatest loss. But let's let the team speak for itself:

Arwenna Silvermoon (Elf Rogue 7), Autumn Dreamstalker (Elf Wizard [Enchantress] 7), Light-Beyond-Darkness (Elf Cleric 7) and Renna Wilds- Untamed (Elf Barbarian 7) certainly had problems coordinating. Despite the team's protest to the eldest sister (Autumn), she decreed that the human paladin would live, for now, saying there were some good humans out there.

Oh well, everyone has their bad days.

When the door to the place gave the teams problems and Arwenna's picking locks failed, Autumn casually used an Open spell to grant access. Were it not for Team Twig's Warp Wood spell warping the door so that it stuck in a bad way, people could have gotten in. The door was finally broken down, which let trolls escape into the countryside. Oh well, details, details....

Arwenna was the first inside, and when she spotted an unfriendly looking figure at the end of a long hallway, she asked Renna, "Here, you deal with it." Autumn cast Invisibility on Renna, who went down the tunnel, only to be ambushed by trolls and rent to shreds before she had the chance to react or rage. While Autumn then aided others with her spells, blasted one of the advancing trolls with a Lightning Bolt, and guarded the door and hallway the barbarian went down (and went down in), Light went exploring and summoned a Celestial Lion to guard the teams' rear.

After Autumn activated the portal leading to the main problem area, both spell-throwers unleashed what spells they could at the enemy, but they seemed to have little to no effect. Arwenna slowed down one of Erythnul's followers with a tanglefoot bag, and Light dropped one of them with an Inflict Serious Wounds, but in the end they had arrived a few minutes too late to stop most of the slaughter. Maybe next time they'll learn to stick together,no?

Renna Wilds-Untamed is remembered in memory by her sisters. Otherwise Team Nature's Vengeance survives to adventure again, hopefully a little wiser for their efforts. Let's hope they don't blame their failures on Team Steel Order.

Team Nature survives to adventure again.

  2. Death from Afar
    Player: Jon Sternfeld
Death from Afar gave a performance of archery prowess that quickly got his point across. That is across, through, and into. Several trolls and constructs were left behind as perforated piles of flesh. Dealing most of the damage this adventure, Death from Afar was in a strong bargaining position for the ring key, but it was not to be. Death From Afar survives to adventure again.

  3. Twig
    Player: Vanessa Wilcox-Swarez
Many have learned the hard way that this druid commands the elemental forces. With another demonstration of spike growth, the enemy received sore feat to remember. His bear traveled as a formidable companion taking minor damage from the automated sentinels. In a true showing of sportsmanship, competitor Tharivol even received a ride on the way to the battlefield. Team Twig survives to adventure again.

  4. Steel Order
    Player: Wayne Edie
Steel Order was on the scene in greater number this adventure. With the addition of his squire, the team showed its usual command of its environment. Activating the portal and even charging a god on a flying mount placed this team as competitors and eventual winners of the ring key. Steel Order survives to adventure again.
